NSDI CAP Extends GeoCommons to Create Geospatial Datasets from Tabular Data
Arlington, VA - March 12, 2009 - FortiusOne, a leading provider of next-generation location intelligence, today announced they have received the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreements Program Award to geo-enable the US government's tabular data. FortiusOne's GeoCommons Platform will be utilized to create geospatial datasets automatically from tabular government data containing location-based references (addresses, ZIPcode, county, city, state, etc.).
The single grant dedicated to geo-enabling tabular data was awarded to FortiusOne to create a shared public web service that will make the geo-enablement of abundant government data simple and intuitive. The resulting service will allow for greater data discovery, exchange, analysis and visualization of geographic data.
"This is a concrete step toward exploiting the geographic context present in over 80% of all data," said Sean Gorman, CEO and founder of FortiusOne. "This award gives FortiusOne the ability to intelligently assign location (point and polygon) to all relevant tabular data and further provides the opportunity to make geography a part of everyone's workflow."
The project's scope will include a robust taxonomy of existing boundaries, both global and domestic, to which tabular data can be joined. By extending the existing GeoCommons Platform, FortiusOne is creating an automated capability for geocoding and spatial join functionalities, thus laying the groundwork to extend their tools for more sophisticated analytic tasks.
"We see huge potential in this collaborative project," said Doug Nebert, Technology Advisor, FGDC. "By further extending their GeoCommons platform, users will not only be able to convert tabular data into geo-enabled data sets, they can also leverage the existing database management, visualization and analytical capabilities of GeoCommons, as well as facilitate sharing and collaboration with the existing GeoCommons user community."

About FGDC
The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is an interagency committee that promotes the coordinated development, use, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial data on a national basis. This nationwide data publishing effort is known as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The NSDI is a physical, organizational, and virtual network designed to enable the development and sharing of this nation's digital geographic information resources. FGDC activities are administered through the FGDC Secretariat, hosted by the National Geospatial Programs Office (NGPO) of the U.S. Geological Survey. The NGPO oversees other geospatial programs of national importance including The National Map and the Geospatial One-Stop activity.
